CARFAC Manitoba exists to develop and promote an appreciation of the visual arts throughout the province of Manitoba by providing education services and information to artists and the public in Manitoba and are an affiliate of CARFAC National.

Canadian Artists’ Representation/Le Front des artistes canadiens (CARFAC) is incorporated federally as a non-profit corporation that is the national voice of Canada’s professional visual artists. As a non-profit association and a National Art Service Organization, their mandate is to promote the visual arts, to promote a socio-economic climate that is conducive to the production of visual arts in Canada, and to conduct research and engage in public education for these purposes. CARFAC was established by artists in 1968 and has been recognized by the Status of the Artist legislation.

Artists, like professionals in other fields, should be paid for their work and share equitably in profits from their work. As the national voice of Canada’s professional visual artists, CARFAC defends artists’ economic and legal rights and educates the public on fair dealing with artists. In doing so, CARFAC engages actively in advocacy, lobbying, research and public education on behalf of artists in Canada.

CARFAC, has also developed the downloadable document Indigenous Protocols dot Art. We will learn how it came about, how people can use it, artists, non-artists, Indigenous and non-Indigenous. And talk about the importance of this document as a resource.

This is such an important workshop I feel that a lot of artists, particularly new artists, aren’t familiar with CARFAC, and what the minimum fee schedule is. We continue to have conversations with institutions and organizations who want to hire artists for a $25 honorarium and a bag of chips, and feel ‘taken advantage of’ when sent links to CARFAC site, with suggested minimum rates of pay. We still have Artists who aren’t certain how to value their time, skill, and knowledge and often settle for that honorarium and bag of chips.

We hope that through this workshop artists, and arts organizations and those wishing to hire artists will understand the value of Artists and learn to offer fair pay along with that bag of chips.

The workshop is offered Free. Please register online by 10:30 am CST OCT 25, 2023, the morning of the event, and a zoom link will be sent to your email address by 11AM ! If you feel that you haven’t received the zoom link, please check your junk mail folder.

UAB is a series of online workshops focusing on the business side of art from an Indigenous perspective, presented in partnership with Creative Manitoba and Urban Shaman Gallery.
