Toronto’s precious archival photographs – reinvented, altered and manipulated

Community partners PhotoED Magazine, the Toronto District School Board, and artist Jessica Thalmann are excited to announce a public pop-up showcase of Windfields Junior High School student work altering and intervening with images from a variety of archives including personal family photo albums, Google Images, the NASA Space Archive and the City of Toronto Archives.

The exhibition of these impressive creative manipulations will be on display at United Contemporary Gallery, for one night only. Join us on TUESDAY MAY 14, 2019, 6-9pm to celebrate with the students, their work exploring photographs ‘Beyond the Surface.’

Windfields students have been working with artist Jessica Thalmann as part of a TDSB Community-Connected Experiential Learning Project to re-invent found images and explore new narratives using new collage, paper weaving, folding, and cutting techniques.

As an interdisciplinary artist whose work questions, destroys and analyses photographs, Jessica Thalmann worked with the students to experiment and think critically about images. Her philosophy is that a photograph is just a piece of paper to be manipulated, cut, torn and folded.

PhotoED magazine will be featuring this story, showcased on a national level, in a future publication as an inspirational feature about creatively connecting young students with images from the past, and questioning context and image manipulation in the era of #fakenews.

We are tremendously excited to share news of this projects public showcase and hope you will join us in celebrating and further questioning the truth in photographs, at the ‘Beyond the Surface’ exhibition.

Windfields students and class teacher Miranda Blazey, alongside artist Jessica Thalmann will be on-hand for media interviews.
