Anne Walsh

I support mothers and their families through art therapy workshops, writing and public speaking. After my eldest daughter was bullied in grade 1, I launched a series of 12 workshops using art to teach prosocial behaviours such as healthy emotional expression, stress management, creativity, friendship, self-esteem and community activism. I start every workshop with a book and decided to write my own children's books about Healthy Emotional Expression. The title of my book is Have You Hugged Your Alien? I was invited into most of the schools in my area to provide 90 minute art workshops during class times. Then parent councils started applying for funds through Parents Reaching Out to offer after-school workshops for families to connect through art. I have also offered this series of three workshops to most of the schools in my area. We progress through three topics: Family Identity through creating a family sculpture, Managing Challenging Emotions and Conflicts through creating clay aliens, and thirdly, How to Stay Connected which includes creating wish boxes filled with ideas provided by both the children and their parents regarding activities they could do together. I self-published a book to facilitate this third workshop, The Story of Poobum and Pompom. That workshop has been requested by local libraries as well. I have used open-ended art directives with children by creating events like Art Break in Kemptville or coordinating the Kids' Zone at the North Grenville Sustainability Fair for many years. I have also offered workshops for individual groups like Brownies or Scouts. My Stress Management and Team building workshops have also been offered in a high school in Smiths Falls two years in a row as half day workshops. I recently self-published a book about motherhood, Out of the Mouths of Moms. I am using the proceeds from the book to organize a summer program for local families with children on the spectrum. Creating art together will be an important part of this initiative.
