Jailen Spurrell

Jailen Spurrell (she/her) is an artist and art instructor based in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. She is known to her art students as Jai. Her artwork is most often inspired by nature, colour, and communities in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Her love of art began in early childhood while growing up in Labrador West, where she could always be found working on a creative project. With the support of her parents, she attended art lessons, camps, and classes with local artists. In 2014, one of her paintings was selected for display in the Arts & Letters Awards Exhibit at The Rooms, and in 2015, she received a community Teen Talent Award for her art portfolio.

In 2021, Jailen completed a Diploma in Community Support Work at Robertson College, aiming to use her creative skill set to support community well-being. She is currently pursuing undergraduate studies at Memorial University, with the goal of completing a Bachelor of Education (Primary/Elementary).

Jailen enjoys sharing her love of art with others and helping people experience the joy, calm, and sense of accomplishment that creative expression can bring. In January 2018, she began teaching private lessons for youth in Labrador West. Since then, she has led after-school programs, summer camps, rehabilitative sessions, classes, and more for artists of all ages and abilities.
