Ruth Cornish

Ruth Cornish holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of British Columbia and is a longtime member of the British Columbia Registered Music Teacher’s Association. She has been welcoming flute, piano, and theory students of all ages and abilities across the Lower Mainland for over 30 years. While her students consistently perform well in recitals, festivals, and exams, she is happy to help students with whatever their goals are, whether they want to learn music for fun and enjoyment, improve their school band playing, or pursue more intensive studies in music.

“I enjoy getting to know my students and learning what inspires them. Each student is an individual with their own interests and learning styles. I love the challenge of finding new ways to help them learn and succeed. My aim is to create a safe environment where students feel supported and free to challenge themselves with whatever their musical goals may be. Being part of their musical journey is exciting to me.”

Ruth’s own musical journey began, like so many others, with band class in elementary school. Music soon became a passion which included more formal flute and piano studies and eventually lead to pursuing further musical studies at university.

“I am forever grateful for the guidance of the many teachers and professors in my life. Among others, I have been blessed to study with Paul Douglas, Camille Churchfield, and Sarah Jackson as well as participate in masterclasses with Michel Debost, Isabel Chapuis, and Peter Lloyd. Their generosity and wisdom continue to inspire me to this day.”

Ruth has enjoyed an active career performing as a soloist and free-lance musician in a variety of settings including chamber ensembles and community-based orchestras.
