Susan Shantora

With a voice that’s been described as comforting and enchanting, Susan Shantora is widely recognized as one of the leading vocalists and vocal teachers in the Northwest Territories and one of the most well-known musicians in the area.

Susan is a friendly, positive and motivated voice teacher and musician, and has worked in numerous related positions at schools in the Northwest Territories including K’alemi Dene School, J.H. Sissons School, Range Lake North School, and the Yellowknife Catholic School Board. Through recent years, Susan has performed with many NWT groups including Classics on Stage Yellowknife, The Northern Divas under the NACC Mentorship Program, and her own Chilly Classics. She has created the ever popular Junior Choir Camp with runs every July.

Currently Susan keeps busy performing as a soprano soloist, along with being an Administrator of the Yellowknife Music Festival, where she worked diligently to create a music festival involving over 300 amateur musicians from ages 7-65, managing over 25 volunteers and a staff of adjudicators, all while also presently offering private lessons for students anywhere from age 6 to 80.

As conductor of the Yellowknife Youth Choir, Susan worked with the Gryphon Trio on the Listen Up! NWT music education project involving 75 singers from 6 communities.

With an educational background in music from the University of Alberta (MMus.), Acadia University (B.Ed.), and the University of Toronto (B.Mus.), Susan brings a traveled repertoire of talents and skills from across Canada, as well as Europe.
