Artfare Essentials

October 28th to November 3rd, 2018 (day off Oct. 31st)

Times: 9:30 to 5:30 daily, with optional evening events and closing party

What is it?

● An introduction to principles and practices of arts that engage with and create community;

● Many things you need to know to start your own community arts project;

● An orientation to potential work or apprenticeship/internships with Jumblies;

● A gathering of artists and others interested in community-engaged arts;

● A mix of presentation, conversation, art-making, site visits and take-home resources;

● A time to consider and discuss the challenges and contradictions inherent in this work;

● A chance to play and learn with others with shared questions and varied perspectives;

● An intensive, fun, thought-provoking, immersive 6-day experience.

 

Topics covered include:

● Definitions, terms, & guiding principles

● Project visioning and planning

● Partnerships with arts and other sectors

● Research: arts and oral history-based approaches

● Facilitation: making art with people

● Bridging and centering diverse cultures and traditions

● Collaborating across disciplines and differences

● Navigating and engaging with conflicts and challenges

● History of Jumblies and offshoots

● Evaluation, documentation & legacy

 

Facilitators: Ruth Howard (Jumblies Artistic Director), with Ange Loft (Jumblies Associate Artistic Director),

other Jumblies and Offshoot staff, and special guest presenters.

Cost: $400 (with some subsidized places available)

Support: Healthy snacks and some lunches are provided. Translation, including ASL, and on-site childcare

can be arranged. Our venues are wheelchair accessible. If other support or accommodation is needed,

please let us know.

 

We can support out-of-town attendees with help finding free or affordable accommodation, and sometimes

through travel subsidies and bursaries, connected with specific funding programs (e.g. our current Ontario

Artist Exchange).

 

Participants will receive a certificate of completion from the Jumblies Studio. This workshop is respected in

Toronto and across Canada as a qualification for community arts employment and funding. However, it does

not claim to cover all areas and topics relevant to this work, and is one piece in a learning path.
