Exile Quarterly Fiction and Poetry Competitions

Founded in 1972 by one of Canada’s most recognized man of letters, Barry Callaghan, Exile Editions and ELQ/Exile: The Literary Quarterly specialize in finding and developing Canadian writers of fiction, poetry, drama, and non-fiction, as well as visual artists engaged in painting, photography, illustration and other fine arts disciplines.

27th Annual SiWC Writing Contest

The 30th Annual SiWC Writing Contest is now OPEN!

First prize: $1000 plus publication

Honourable Mention: $150 plus publication

Cost: $15/entry Deadline: September 15, 2022: All entries must be emailed by midnight, Friday, September 15, 2022. No late entries will be considered.

Open to all writers except SiWC paid staff, board members, and immediate families.

Young writers are welcome to enter, but must be aware that their work will be judged blind among submissions made by adult writers.

Room Magazine Contests

Room is Canada’s oldest feminist literary journal, and has published fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, art, interviews, and book reviews for forty years. Published quarterly by the West Coast Feminist Literary Magazine Society, also known as the Growing Room Collective, Room showcases writing and art by women (cisgender and transgender), transgender men, Two-Spirit and nonbinary people.

EVENT Magazine - Non-Fiction Contest

For 47 years, EVENT has published the very best in contemporary new poetry and prose. We are one of Western Canada’s longest-running literary magazines, and welcome submissions written in English from around the world. Each issue of EVENT includes high quality fiction, poetry, non-fiction and book reviews, and we feature emerging and established writers side-by-side in our pages.

Constance Rooke CNF Prize

The Malahat Review invites creative nonfiction writers to enter the Constance Rooke Creative Nonfiction Prize, for which one prize of $CAN 1,000 is awarded. The contest is open to Canadian and international writers anywhere in the world, with a final deadline of midnight (PDT) on 1 August 2019. All entries are judged anonymously, and the winning piece will be published in the magazine's winter issue #209.

CBC Poetry Prize

The 2020 CBC Poetry Prize is now open. 

You could win $6,000 from the Canada Council for the Arts, a two-week writing residency at the Banff Centre and have your work published on CBC Books.

Four finalists will each receive $1,000 from the Canada Council for the Arts and have their work published on CBC Books.

WHAT: You can submit an original, unpublished poem or collection of poems, up to 600 words in length. There is no minimum word requirement.

Government of PEI - Arts Grants

The mandate of the PEI Arts Grants is to support, assist, encourage and represent the arts community in the province. Funding is available to Prince Edward Island artists through a juried grant application process.

The requirements are different for each  Arts Grant stream. Your application will be reviewed by your peers and funding will be allocated based on the quality of your application. You must complete a separate application for each grant.

Barbara Deming Memorial Fund

Small artist support grants ( $500 - $1500 ) to individual feminist women in the arts  who are citizens with primary residence in the U.S and Canada. We are interested in funding projects which you have begun or are well underway, and for which you have substantial work to show.
