ROUNDTABLE ON INDIGENOUS MUSICAL SOVEREIGNTY

How does your orchestra invite mutually enriching, reciprocal, and respectful exchanges with Indigenous artists? Not only in what’s on the program – but also in the experience of creating together.  

In 2019, ten artists came together in Banff for the Canadian Indigenous Classical Music Gathering, and co-authored the Statement on Indigenous Musical Sovereignty*. It reads:

Le projet La Route de l'esclave de l'UNESCO et l'Institut de recherche de la Fondation Guerrand-Hermès pour la paix (GHFP) lancent un rapport de recherche qui présente les principales approches et pratiques visant à traiter l'héritage de la traite négrière et de l'esclavage transatlantiques. Sous la coordination du projet Route de l'esclave de l'UNESCO et de l'Institut de recherche GHFP, ce rapport est le fruit d'une collaboration impliquant une équipe internationale de chercheurs et de praticiens.

The UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development will be held as a virtual conference from 17 to 19 May 2021.

The conference is organized by UNESCO in cooperation with and generously supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research of Germany, and with the German Commission for UNESCO as advisory partner.

You can join the Conference by livestreaming key sessions on UNESCO's YouTube in English or the original language of the speaker and the floor without translations.

When Behrouz Boochani, Kurdish-Iranian human rights activist/journalist/writer was in the Australian-run offshore refugee detention camp, in Manus Island, Papua New Guinea he secretly wrote around one hundred articles and a book and made a film all on his smartphone: the multi award-winning book No Friend but the Mountains: Writing from Manus Prison and the critically acclaimed co-directed film “Chauka, Please Tell Us the Time” (with Arash Kamali Sarvestani). Through writing and art he was able to share his harrowing story with the world.
